Dr. John Paxon Harlan

Dr. John Paxon Harlan, 83, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 11, 2019. He was born on Dec. 8, 1935 in Sheboygan, Wisc., but grew up in Philadelphia, Penn. to John and Mary Gallagher Harlan.

He later went to Penn State University, and afterwards became a Merchant-Seaman. His love for ships and ocean was always there. After a few years, he enlisted in the US Army and was sent to Augsburg, Germany in 1950 serving in the 508 M.P. Battalion.

He met his wife, Juri L. Oehler there. They were married for 56 happy years. They moved to South Florida where he worked in the Pompano Beach Police Department, followed by working in the Broward County Sheriff’s Administration and later joined the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).

He finished his Master’s degree and completed his Doctorate in Criminal Justice (PHD). He loved teaching and took a job as the chair of the Criminal Justice Department at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches in East Texas for 22 years.

After his retirement as full Professor and Emeritus, he and his wife, Juri moved to Hunt, Texas, to the great Hill Country of Texas. From here, they have taken many trips with their RV to the beautiful Southwest.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Kathleen C. Cailloux Humane Society of Kerrville.
