UVALDE – With two outs on the board and the score knotted 1-1 in the third inning, Tivy senior Alyssa Hickman made it clear that the Lady Antlers were taking home the win by blasting an RBI homerun over the center field wall to give her team a 3-1 lead over Uvalde.

Doubles by Lexi Perez and Campbell Grona in the fifth inning sealed the deal for Tivy, who claimed a 7-4 victory over the Lady Lobos in the first game of the three-game Class 5A Region IV Area Round series.

“Alyssa’s home run came just when we needed it,” Tivy coach Jeremy Hickman said. “It was a clutch hit and really gave us momentum at just the right time.”

Hickman said he respects the talent on the Uvalde team and said the Lady Lobos will put up a fight in this series.

“They have 12 seniors and they are hungry,” Hickman said. “They are going to fight hard to advance in the playoffs.”

Given their opposition, Hickman said he was incredibly proud of his team’s defensive effort.

“We played the best defense I think that we’ve played all year,” Hickman said. “Hannah Delgado snagged two hard shots (to first base) in the sixth and seventh innings. They had runners in scoring position and she shut them down. Lexi Callcott did a great job at second base and, once again, Campbell Grona made several great catches in the outfield in key points in the game.”

Tivy pitcher Kaitlyn Secor threw a stellar game, tossing 81 pitches for 57 strikes and allowing only five hits on the night.

“Kaitlyn hit all of her spots from the circle and got us the ground balls we needed,” Hickman said. “She played a solid game and did a great job for us.”

Perez and Hickman led the Lady Antlers at the plate, with Perez going 3-for-4 and two RBIs and Hickman connecting twice on three at-bats for two RBIs.

Lexi Callcott recorded two hits on as many attempts, while Marissa Medina batted .500 with two hits and one RBI.

Delgado and Grona finished with one hit each and two RBIs combined.

Tivy finished with 13 hits for 7 RBIs.

The Lady Antlers will play Game 2 of the series Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Lady Antler Field. If necessary, Game 3 will be played on Saturday in Devine.

“It would be great to see the community come out and support these girls on Thursday night. It's rare to have a home game during playoffs,” Hickman said “This could be the last game for these seniors to play on this field. They have worked hard for so long and represent this community with pride and character.”

Tivy completed District 26-5A action with a 14-2 record, claimed the district championship title and are 24-10-2 on the season.
