Minors hold off Harper

With the score knotted at 7-7 in the third inning, the Kerrville Minors All-Stars responded by recording seven runs over the next two innings to take a 14-9 win over Harper in District 26 All-Star tournament action played in Fredericksburg.

Denley Landrum connected on a double in the first inning to get Kerrville on the board by plating Cristian Benevides and Jaden Lopez. Harper Kothe earned an RBI on a single to give Kerrville a 3-0 lead.

Harper added two runs in the top of the second inning, while Kerrville added four runs in the bottom of the frame.

Lopez pounded a triple on a line drive to center field, allowing Benevides to cross the plate. Lopez scored on a passed ball. Harper Kothe ripped a double to score Josh Wheatfall and Kothe scored on a passed ball, bringing the score to 7-2.

Harper was not giving up, however, adding five runs in the top of the third inning to tie the game.

Kerrville did not score again until the bottom of the fourth inning when Logan Dunbar and Boston Carpenter scored on a wild pitch and Benevides earned two RBIs on a right field double, giving Kerrville back the lead at 11-7 and the momentum.

On their next at-bat, Kerrville upped their lead to 14-7 on a single by Kothe, double by Carpenter and RBI fielder’s choice by Beck Winfield.

Kerrville held Harper to only two runs in the sixth and final inning to take the win and earn the right to advance in district tournament play.

Ridge Patrick got the start on the mound, going two innings and striking out six batters. Benevides, Wheatfall, William Conklin and Landrum helped close out the game for Kerrville.

As a team, Kerrville threw 171 pitches on the night, allowing only five hits and sitting down 14 batters.

Kothe led Kerrville at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Benevides, Lopez, Landrum and Carpenter also contributed hits for the team.

Kerrville will face Fredericksburg Little League Minors Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
