The Rev. Dr. Thomas G. Long, named one of the 12 most-effective preachers in the English-speaking world by Baylor University, will be guest speaker for the 29th annual Currie Enrichment Series, March 31-April 2, at First Presbyterian Church of Kerrville.
“Puzzles and Paradoxes: The Strange and Wonderful Parables of Jesus” will be Long’s subject.
“Jesus’ favorite method of teaching was with parables,” says Long, the Bandy Professor Emeritus of Preaching at the Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, Ga. “These stories seem so simple and beautiful, and yet each of them is profound and packs a remarkable punch. We will seek to discover the challenges and promises in Jesus’ parables for our own lives of faith.”
The series starts with a lecture at 7 p.m. Friday, March 31, in the sanctuary on “Do You Not Understand this Parable: Mysterious Parables as Jesus Spoke Them and as Mark Wrote Them.”
His second lecture, at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 1, will be “Bridesmaids, Shepherds, Fools, and Con-Artists: The Parables of Matthew and Luke.”
Dr. Long’s formal presentations conclude with the sermon during the 11 a.m. worship on Sunday, April 2. His sermon, “Open Windows,” will be based on Luke 16:19-31.
He will also lead an informal group discussion about Jesus’ parables, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1, in Ryan Hall. Light refreshments will be provided.
All presentations are free and open to the public. Free-will offerings will be taken for the support of the Currie Enrichment Series.
First Presbyterian Church began the lecture series about biblical scripture following its 1988 centennial celebration. It was named the Currie Enrichment Series to honor former pastor Thomas W. Currie III in 2007. Past speakers have included noted writers, biblical scholars, ethicists, psychologists, preachers, and theologians.
For more information, call the First Presbyterian Church office at 257-3310. The church is located at 800 Jefferson St.
