Schreiner University has achieved its second highest enrollment in school history.
Schreiner has a total enrollment of 1,130 for the 2014-2015 academic year. Last year saw a record enrollment of 1,136.
“Although we are pleased we reached our second highest enrollment in history, our total enrollment this fall is basically flat, down in some student categories and up in others,” Schreiner President Dr. Tim Summerlin said. “Our intention is certainly to return to an overall growth mode next year, because we are still focused on achieving our goal of 1,200 students.”
“Looking beyond the numbers,” Summerlin continued, “I am particularly excited about instituting the Schreiner Experience, an integrated series of exciting initiatives that reduce our students’ textbook costs by half, while expanding opportunities related to their preparation for ‘meaningful work and purposeful lives in a changing global society,’ as stated in our mission. Second, our new online registered nurse to bachelor of science in nursing program for working adults is off to a great start.”
Dr. Charlie McCormick, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said the new Schreiner Experience not only addresses the costs and availability of textbooks but it also provides students mission-centered opportunities that complement and expand the learning that happens in the classroom.
“This initiative makes experiences that were available to only a few students available to all students,” McCormick said. “Students will have increased opportunities for relevant and intentional work study experiences, externships, and internships. It will also give students increased opportunities to participate in service, civic, and leadership positions, so that they are well prepared for the citizenship roles they will be expected to play in their communities. Finally, this initiative provides students increased opportunities to have the world come to campus through a variety of programming and activities and to have them go out into the world through study abroad and student travel.”
Larry Cantu, vice president for enrollment services, said Schreiner is proud to welcome 273 freshmen students and 65 transfer students from around the nation.
“Our first RN to BSN class currently has 26 students enrolled for the fall semester and Greystone Preparatory Academy and School at Schreiner has the highest number of students in the program’s history, with 49 enrolled,” Cantu said. “We are very excited about our new students and know they will have an incredible experience here.”
