Kerrville Juniors dominate Crystal City

Kerrville Junior All-Star Xavier Hernandez through 50 pitches and struck out seven batters Friday night against Crystal City.

After building a 3-0 lead over five innings, the Kerrville Little League Junior All-Stars erupted in the final two frames to take an 11-1 win over Crystal City in Texas West Section 3 tournament action at Ingram Tom Moore High School.

Kerrville racked up 11 hits and five RBIs on the night, highlighted by doubles ripped by Adan Hernandez and Hayden Kneese. Kneese recorded three RBIs for Kerrville.

Julian Rhodes scored on a single by Eric Tenery in the first inning. Gavin Everett crossed the plate on an error in the fourth inning and after reaching base on a double, Hernandez earned a run for kerrville on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth inning, bring the score to 3-0.

Kerrville continued to hold off Crystal City to end the frame and rallied in the sixth inning to take an 8-0 lead.

Rhodes led the rally with a left field single that plated Hernandez. Kneese followed with a two RBI double. Hernandez brought Kneese around the bases on a double and Tenery singled to score Hernandez.

Kerrville added two more runs in the seventh inning when Kneese hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Rhodes and Hernandez crossed the plate on a passed ball.

Crystal City earned their only run of the game in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly.

Hernandez and Tenery each went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Kneese earned three RBIs on one hit. Also getting rips for Kerrville were Rhodes, Peter Lockwood, Colton Wolfe and Xavier Hernandez.

Adan Hernandez got the start on the mound and went for a single inning, striking out three Crystal City batters and allowing zero hits. Xavier Hernandez threw for three innings, sitting down seven batters and allowing one hit. Kneese and Rhodes closed out the game, going for one inning each and collectively tossing 58 pitches for 30 strikes.

Kerrville advances to the winner’s bracket and will take on McAlister today at 5 p.m. at Ingram Tom Moore High School.
